The\u00a0magnificent cedars of British Columbia\u2019s temperate coastal rainforest stand for countless seasons even though the winds and rains batter them.\u00a0 The cedars\u00a0dance in the face of their environment’s stresses.<\/p>\n

As a storm worsens,\u00a0their dancing becomes more energetic. Branches toss. Crowns wave.\u00a0\u00a0Even their trunks flex and sway.<\/p>\n

Their flexibility\u00a0is their\u00a0resilience.\u00a0\u00a0They bend before the forces that push on them but do not often break. \u00a0They feel the stress of the storm but push back against it. \u00a0They are adaptive and flexible, not stubborn and resistive.<\/p>\n

People also face the storms and need to be resilient in the face of them, resilient\u00a0rather than rigid.\u00a0 Resilience is that characteristic which allows us to push back against our stresses\u00a0and resist the influences of trauma.\u00a0\u00a0Resilience allows us to endure the worst times and still be us, even a new and better us.<\/p>\n
